10 Things You Didn’t Know About Basement Jaxx

Having dominated the UK dance scene since they got their start in the late 90’s, it’s hardly surprising that Felix Buxton and Simon Ratcliff aka Basement Jaxx, are still destroying dance floors of major venues and underground clubs a like. Their tracks are timeless, their beats infectious, and their energy level is as outrageous as it was the day they began putting on their own nights in South London.

Under their belt the duo have racked up Best New Act in 1999, Two Brit Awards for best Dance Act, a Grammy award for their album ‘Kish Kash’ and countless nominations in the past 10 years. It’s therefore not surprising that their music and legacy is deeply woven into the fabric of UK dance music and will be for some time to come blah blah blah yes that’s all very well and good, but what it ISNT, is surprising and, to be frank, it’s all just a bit dull.

So, time to lock the those pretentious accolades, awards and nominations away and find out who the men behind the decks really are in a little game called 10 things you never knew about Basement Jaxx. Beginning with a warm-up round here are some basic facts that have been mentioned time and time again by the pair in interviews, press releases and news features.

    1. Basement Jaxx was originally the name of a party that took place in the basement of a Mexican restaurant in Brixton. The night was put on by Felix Buxton, when Simon Ratcliff joined in on the decks that’s when they became the DJ and producer super group we know today as Basement Jaxx.
    2. Basement Jaxx co-wrote the score for the 2011 film ‘Attack The Blocks’, the soundtrack was released in May of last year.
    3. Their 4th Studio Album released in September of 2006 features vocals by famed Swedish pop-star Robyn as well as 70’s British singer Linda Lewis and also Lilly Allen.
    4. Despite the widely accepted fact that Basement Jaxx came out of London’s Brixton underground, the duo actually come from Camberwall, a district nearly 4 miles further east.

Interesting? Perhaps. Lets see how you fare in this next round….

 5. Felix Buxton once mentioned that the ugliest landmark in London was the Elephant & Castle shopping center; Big Ben was the most beautiful.

6. Basement Jaxx can be credited with popularizing the now widely used sound technology ‘Auto-tune’, used today by rap stars and singers like T-Pain and Cher.

7. Member Simon Ratcliff was an ice cream man for 6 months when he was 19. He recalls spending a good amount of time “smoking weed and getting fat on ice cream” before getting ousted by other ice cream vendors who grabbed the now Grammy-award winning producer by the scruff shouting ‘get the fuck off my territory, this isn’t your place!’

And if you already knew all of that then I guarantee you didn’t know this

8. Felix Buxton’s father, Derek Buxton, is the vicar of a small town just outside Leicestershire. His advice to his son was ‘don’t reach for the stars, just do something honest and real.’ He has since changed his attitude.

9. Simon Ratcliff once approached sex pistols bassist Glen Matlock, asking him if he was Paul Cook, the Sex Pistols drummer. The penetrating scowl he received from Matlock, said it all.

10. Simon Ratcliff first came to London as a squatter. Some mates of his were squatting in a disused Magistrates Court just opposite a police station when Ratcliff moved in with them. What was once where his bedroom was is now a boots in today’s Centre Court shopping complex.

Get to know your Jaxx facts people, you can catch them live Saturday March 19th at Ministry of Sound.

Interview || Nicky Romero

Nicky Romero is a name on everyone’s lips at the moment. Yet another Dutchman that can do no wrong in the House world, stellar production, sellout gigs and the approval of his peers… all this and he’s barely even started.

We chat to Nicky ahead of his duo gigs for Bitch Events in Manchester and Glasgow on March 31st!

So then Nicky, let’s begin!

You’re playing a double whammy for Bitch on March 31st, in Manchester AND Glasgow, are you looking forward to it? Have you heard much about Bitch’s nights?

Yes very much so, I love coming out to England, English people are always up for a party and so am I!!! J

With Manchester being Bitch’s home, it’s always a bit special, have you played in Manchester before?

No I have not, really excited to come over!

What have you heard about how the Manchester people like to party?

I heard and experienced that UK punters in general are mad, just the way I like it lol.

Your track “Toulouse” recently came out on Spinnin’ Records, can you tell us a little bit about it? What your inspiration for it?

In get inspiration from all kinds of music, but for Toulouse I did not really derive my inspiration from one specific track. I was just trying out things and this then kind of grew into what it is through a lot of trial and error, chuffed with the outcome though, we just did a nice remix package too, Tommy Trash and Chocolate Puma did an amazing job.

What’s your most prized possession –

Pffffff that is a hard one if I have to choose I’d say my motorbike

What would you say is the secret to a DJ’s success now?

Making good music first and foremost. I think it is very hard to breakthrough as just a DJ nowadays.

If you won the lottery what would be the first thing you bought –

My own fully tricked out studio.

With summer finally on the horizon, can you let us in on any exciting plans you have, Ibiza maybe?

Yes I am going to be resident at David Guetta’s FMIF party in the Pacha this season.

What do you want to say you’ve done this year when it gets to midnight on December 31st?

I would love to be able to look back and say I did a collab with Axwell I am a big big fan of his!!

Orange Juice or Coffee in the morning?

Orange Juice please!

Describe a typical day in your life –

When I am traveling to do gigs it is quite a rigid schedule of flying, trying to catch an hour of sleep here or there, doing a gig and flying out the next day again.

When I am at home I either hang with friends but most of the times I spend in the studio.

How do you deal with criticism?

I try to take it on the chin and learn from it.

Who is your idol?

I have many to be honest. I look up a lot to David Guetta, Axwell basically I admire people that take a risk and follow their heart, if you can make money with what you are passionate about that makes you idol material to my opinion.

What were your highlights in 2011?

Not to sound corny but 2011 was one big highlight for me. So much crazy stuff happened I sometimes have to pinch myself to see if it is all real.

And finally, what can we expect from you on March 31st?

A night full of madness energy and great music

Steve Aoki’s Wonderland Tour Comes to the UK

At the start of this year, Aoki released his first full-length album ‘Wonderland’. A genre-crossing hybrid of underground-meets-mainstream, buzzing with Les Rythmes Digitales-esque dance pop through to rock-infused disco, dubstep and even accessible house cuts, Aoki has created what he believes is his magnum opus and an album that perfectly reflects his spirit and vision as an artist at his peak. ‘Wonderland’ debuted at #10 in the US and #6 in the Canadian iTunes album charts and has garnered widespread acclaim from the US dance cognoscenti like Rolling Stone, Billboard and Big Shot Magazine, who hailed the album as ‘one of the top dance/electronic music albums to look for in 2012’.

Now he’s swept the US with his notorious crowd surfing, champagne popping and stage diving sets. Steve’s heading this way to show the UK what Wonderland’s all about, and he’s bringing his inflatable raft with him! Check the links below for more info. DJ Mix || FunkFabric Radioshow February 2012 – ‘Big Room to Tech’ Edition

It seems that today every single DJ who is anybody and everybody has his/her own podcast. Then, of course, there are those who ARE NOT anybody and everybody with their own podcast. And finally, there are the podcasts of the mother’s of those who are not anybody and everybody. Basically, there’s a lot of music out their and a lot of people showcasing that music via a podcast. Now, there are a select few podcast that I subscribe to, the rest is just noise.

The list goes something like this:

But let me introduce the newest addition. It’s almost as if this podcast was made for me because of its split personality. The first half of the show focuses on more commercial house music while the second half gets a bit deeper and more techie. I loved almost every single track I heard off of it and most importantly, I hadn’t heard the track before. Can’t say that about some of the other podcasts I’m subscribed to. So if you know what’s good for you, you’ll take my advice and give Ralph Good’s FunkFabric Radio Show a listen and hopefully it’ll become a regular on your podcast list.

Preview || AutoErotique – Bring That Beat Back (Tiësto Edit)

Label boss at Musical Freedom and superstar dj phenomenon Tiësto has jumped on this new AutoErotique track with his own edit. To describe it as ‘phat’, ‘dirty’ or ‘sick’, would be a bit of an understatement. Tiësto’s kept those well-known AutoErotique big synths and the track’s clutch vocal sample but, thrown in monster build-ups and drops that will shake festival crowds to their core.

Definitely a worthy follow-up to his heavy hitter ‘Maximal Crazy‘ which had everyone talking last year. When Tiesto mentioned on twitter that he had a few big ones coming out of the studio, didn’t think it would be THIS big. What I like about Tiesto’s productions is that, un-like some of the Beatport top 10 tunes coming out, his sound and style are distinctive. Truly putting his signature on every track, his edit for ‘Bring That Beat Back’, will be out MARCH 12th on Musical Freedom Records.

Release || Kill The Noise & Datsik – Lightspeed

Brand new release from Kill The Noise and Datsik, ‘Lightspeed’ is unmistakably the latest track to come from OWSLA. It might be categorized as Electro House on Beatport, but like most OWSLA releases, it’s so much more than that. Packed with loads of interesting sounds, effects and bass lines, this tune will bring some serious energy to the party. Not just all about the Bass, its melody is quite infectious as well. Grab it on Beatport.

The crowds at VENUS will be welcoming the formidable NICKY ROMERO for his DEBUT performance for BITCH! Yet another Dutchman that can do no wrong at the minute, Nicky has been honing his jaw dropping skills since a very tender age that inspired him to take his own spin on David Guetta’s ‘When Love Takes Over’ which saw him become a YouTube sensation and has now racked up nearly TWO MILLION views on his channel!

His release ‘My Friend’, which was brought out on the world famous Spinnin’ Records, catapulted into the top 4 overall Beatport chart and rocketed to number one on Dance-Tunes. Release || Sander Van Doorn – Chasin’ (Original Mix)

My verdict on Sander van Doorn’s latest release, ‘Chasin’, is the following. It’s a catchy, big room, progressive house track and yea it sounds really good but it lacks a bit of substance that we’ve seen in Sander’s previous releases. It just isn’t as interesting or complex as say, ‘Drink to Get Drunk’.

I typically like all of Sander’s tunes he puts out BUT they don’t really have a distinctive sound, something that when I hear it I would say, ‘yep that’ sounds like Sander van Doorn’.

On one hand, I would say Sander’s recent music verges on being very commercial, especially when it comes to his vocal tracks. ‘What Did I Do feat Lucy Taylor’ , ‘Eagles’ and ‘Rolling the Dice’ would be examples. But then on the other hand,  there’s a real depth, driving and emotive element to some of his other tracks. Then there are those that fall somewhere in between. Tracks like ‘Kok0′ and ‘Kitten’ seem to have both depth and a big melody, they do well in both commercial DJ sets and the more underground ones.

With ‘Chasin’, I believe its one of those in-between tracks but falls slightly more on the commercial side of Progressive house. Still, it’s got some great melodies and with all that energy, it’ll certainly jack up any dance floor.

Chicane – Don’t Give Up (Norman Doray & Albin Myers Private Bootleg) [Free Download]

‘Don’t Give Up’ by Chicane and featuring the vocals of Bryan Adams is easily one of the hottest dance anthems of the naughties. It was released in 2000 and went straight to #1 on the UK chart, spreading like wild-fire to clubs in the U.S. and the rest of the world. Interestingly, the track was debuted to the world in exactly the same way its done today, on Pete Tong’s Radio 1 show. Yes, ‘Don’t Give Up’ was an exclusive first play on the show nearly 13 years ago and not only was it also an ‘Essential New Tune’, it was dubbed ‘Essential New Tune for the millennium’. It gets better…

The track then went on to outsell Madonna’s single ‘American Pie’ by 1224 copies, knocking it right off its #1 spot in the UK chart. So now the question stands, did Norman Doray and Albin Myers do such anthemic tune any justice in their recent FREE bootleg?
